About J. Matthew Reinersman
J. Matthew Reinersman, MD, FACS, completed his undergraduate training in Biochemistry at Georgetown University in Washington, DC. He proceeded to medical school in his home state at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine in Springfield, IL, and general surgery training at Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, DC. During general surgery, he also pursued a research fellowship examining the molecular basis of lung cancer at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City. After completing general surgery, Dr. Reinersman trained in cardiothoracic surgery at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, and then joined the faculty as an assistant professor in the Department of Surgery at the University of Oklahoma and the Stephenson Cancer Center. Dr. Reinersman now leads the Section of Thoracic and Foregut Surgery within the Division of Cardiac, Thoracic and Vascular Surgery. He is board certified by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery and the American Board of Surgery.
Dr. Reinersman treats all types of thoracic malignancies, including lung cancer, esophageal cancer, thymic cancers, mesothelioma, and chest wall tumors. His particular interest lies in the use of robotic technology in the treatment of thoracic malignancies. He has pioneered the use of robotic thoracic surgery at OUMC, and routinely uses this in surgery for lung cancer, esophageal cancer and other masses in the chest. He also serves at the Director of the Lung Cancer Screening Clinic, an important tool in decreasing the death rate from lung cancer by catching it early in high-risk patients. Under his direction, the Stephenson Cancer Center’s program has achieved national recognition with designation as a Screening Center of Excellence by the GO2 Foundation for Lung Cancer. Dr. Reinersman also has an interest in benign esophageal and thoracic disorders, particularly the management of reflux and achalasia.
Dr. Reinersman is an active member of many professional associations, including the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, the Southern Thoracic Surgical Association, and the General Thoracic Surgical Club. He is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He also serves as a peer reviewer on multiple academic journals, such as the Annals of Thoracic Surgery and the European Journal of Cardio-Thoracic Surgery. His research interests include optimizing the care of lung cancer patients, and bringing innovation to the bedside and operating room, introducing new technologies to his patients here in Oklahoma and advocating for others to do the same.
