Changes in breast tissue happen throughout your life, especially during puberty, parts of the menstrual cycle, pregnancy, childbirth and breastfeeding, as well as menopause. Knowing what’s normal for your breasts can help you recognize signs of change that need special attention or medical care.
The best way to fight breast cancer is to find it early. Mammograms help find breast cancer early when it’s easier to treat. By getting a mammogram, you’re taking a proactive step towards a 98% survival rate. Regular mammograms are recommended for women over 40, but your doctor may suggest starting earlier based on your personal risk factors.
When you choose OU Health for your breast health care, you’ll work with Oklahoma’s largest and most comprehensive group of board-certified breast radiologists and breast health specialists for mammograms, annual screenings, complete evaluation, accurate diagnosis and a personalized treatment plan that fits your specific situation.

We offer the convenient and comprehensive screenings you need to detect breast cancer early. Some of our services include:
Inherited BRCA1/2 gene mutations are rare but can cause about 5% of breast cancers and 10-15% of ovarian cancers. You might get a BRCA1/2 gene test if your personal or family history shows an inherited mutation or if you have a certain type of breast cancer. Women at average risk of breast and ovarian cancer usually don’t need this test
During your appointment, we’ll assess your risk using your family and personal history. Based on your risk level, our specialist will recommend the best screening tools for you. We might suggest genetic testing if needed. If you’re at high-risk for breast cancer, you’ll join a special program with regular mammograms, ultrasounds, and/or MRIs to keep a close watch on your health.
If you’re at high risk for breast cancer, you’ll have access to clinical experts at the Stephenson Cancer Center. They can discuss options to prevent cancer and offer you the chance to join prevention trials.
