About Jami Valenzuela

Jami enjoys taking care of pediatric head trauma cases and seeing how much they can improve through intensive medical management, surgical treatment, and rehabilitation. She also enjoys following spina bifida and VP shunt patients and families throughout the years and watching them grow and succeed against all odds.

I absolutely love working with children and have worked in pediatrics my entire medical career. I attended the University of Oklahoma for a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing, and graduated in 2007. I worked at OU Children's primarily in the PICU and various other units for several years as a nurse where I grew and learned more than I ever though imaginable. I wanted more growth in my career and to further my education, so I went on to obtain a Master of Science degree as a Primary Care Pediatric Nurse Practitioner at the University of South Alabama and started working in Pediatric Neurosurgery in 2014. I recently added a Post-Masters Graduate Certificate in Pediatric Acute Care in 2020 from the University of Tennessee. I have loved my journey through pediatric medicine and my job as a Pediatric Neurosurgery NP has been very rewarding in so many ways. I can't imaging working in any other field or environment. On a personal note, I am married with 2 daughters and we have 3 little dogs who run the household! I am a huge OU football fan. BOOMER SOONER! On my free time, I love to travel to new places, go to concerts, explore the outdoors, try new recipes, do at home projects, and spend time with my family.

Unfortunately, my experience wasn't due to the provider herself. I think she was doing the best she can. Our experience was not great due to our surgeon left unexpectedly to us and it seems like the office and the neurosurgery area is just a mess because of it. So, we'll probably be looking elsewhere for further care.

I was scheduled to meet two specialist doctors at the same time to discuss a complex medical procedure to be done on my son. NEITHER provider was there!! This was a waste of time and absolutely pointless. I was called MULTIPLE times to confirm and then achieved ABSOLUTELY nothing! I couldn't be more so appointed in the way this was handled. One hour before the appointment, I received a call from a hand specialist doctor who said that my son needed a referral to be seen and that he was referred to this doctor. I did not know who it was or why they had called me. I told them there was nothing wrong with my son's hand it was his shoulder. They said ok and hung up. When I made it to this visit, I found out that the doctor who was supposed to be there that day to see my son was the office who called that morning. I assume she decided she couldn't be bothered to show up because she didn't have a referral from my son's PCP. Why didn't her office call me before the day of his appointment to do this?!? I am BEYOND Frustrated at this entire situation. I have been using OU for many years as both of my children are 17 now. Just recently I have been experiencing this kind of terrible customer service from the PROVIDERS. Not the office staff. I mean except whomever was supposed to get a referral for this visit and FAILED to do their job. And failed to call and reschedule instead of wasting my time, and resources, as well as taking off work to go for no reason at all. BEYOND DISAPPOINTED.

It wasn't acceptable, I was mad ego feel pushed out of the office, like she didn't have time to actually care about him.

When I called, I was able to get an appointment the following day, which was great. The only hiccup was that my son's pediatrician's office had put the info to the EMR, so I wasn't called to book an appointment.
