About Alexander Raines

Alexander R. Raines, MD, FACS is an Assistant Professor, Director of Robotic Surgery, Co-Director of the Medical Student Surgical Clerkship, and Residency Program Site-Director – OU Edmond for the OU Department of Surgery. He is also a contracting general surgeon for the Oklahoma City VA Hospital, and the consultative general surgeon for the Oklahoma City Thunder basketball team.

A native of Lincoln, NE, Dr. Raines earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Kansas, his medical degree from the University of Nebraska, and completed his general surgery residency at the University of Oklahoma after which he became a board-certified general surgeon (American Board of Surgery) and immediately joined the OU Department of Surgery faculty.

Dr. Raines enjoys a busy clinical practice treating patients with a wide variety of general surgical conditions including hernias (inguinal, ventral, umbilical, incisional) and gallbladder issues. He has a focus on minimally invasive surgical approaches with a particular skill set in robot-assisted laparoscopic surgery. He focuses not only on minimizing pain and time to return to work/activity, but he also works hard to ensure that his patients feel comfortable and informed throughout their pre-, peri-, and post-operative experiences – he wants his patients’ experience to feel very personal.

Along with his clinical practice, Dr. Raines is committed to education. In addition to being the medical student Surgery Clerkship Co-Director and faculty member of the Academy of Teaching Scholars, he is the faculty advisor for the student Surgery Interest Group and is the residency Director of Robotic Education, along with individually mentoring many students and resident physicians. Also, he directs nationally attended robotic-surgery simulation courses and proctors surgeons who are new to adapt robotic-surgery into their own practice.

While Dr. Raines works hard to offer his patients a first-class surgical experience, he also strives to improve the hospital and university for which he proudly works to ensure that all patients treated within the OU Health system receive the highest level of care possible. To this end, he serves on the OU Health Quality Medical Staff Oversight Committee, the OU Health Credentialing Committee, the OU Physicians Policies and Procedures Committee, the OU Edmond Peer Review Committee, and the OU Medical Executive Committee.

Dr. Raines loves his job, loves the privilege of earning the trust of his patients with the goal of improving their lives through surgery, and loves the opportunity to help shape the future of medicine.

As the most important focus, Alex loves spending time with his wife, and step-daughter, at home and traveling. He also loves spending time with his dog on the mountain bike trails.
